A useful winter kit starts with a car that is ready for the journey. Use this checklist to decide what needs attention, then buy only the equipment that fills a real gap. This is general preparation guidance, not a vehicle inspection.
The AA recommends clearing windows, replacing damaged wipers, keeping lights clean and using suitable screenwash in cold weather. Follow the screenwash label and your handbook. Allow time to clear and demist the car before leaving.
Make a short list for your own car: are the wipers working properly, is your scraper within reach, and do you know where the screenwash reservoir is? If you are unsure about a fluid or a fault, ask a garage instead of guessing.
Use the vehicle’s pressure label or handbook for your tyre size and load, and check pressures cold. Our tyre and wheel resources help you find a starting reference. Have damage or repeated pressure loss assessed by a tyre specialist. If the car struggles to start, arrange a battery and charging-system check before relying on it for a long trip.
A pressure gauge or inflator can support routine checks; neither repairs a damaged tyre. If you already own one, check its condition and instructions before adding another to your shopping list.
The AA includes a scraper, torch, charged phone and power bank in its winter advice. Warm clothing and suitable footwear can also help during a delay. Choose supplies for your route and passengers, and keep them secured.
For each item, record where it will live, how it is powered and when you last checked it. This is more useful than buying a large bundle with equipment you do not understand. Follow your vehicle instructions for jump-starting or charging; do not treat jump leads as a universal solution.
Check weather and travel advice before leaving and reconsider the journey if conditions are unsuitable. A well-stocked boot does not make an unsafe route safe.
